Email Outage

The Irth Networks email service is in the process of being deluged with millions of pieces of unsolicited email. In order to resolve the issue we have had to take the email server out of service. We hope to be able to restore full email functionality shortly.

Update 9/29 @ 17:221 EST: Email issues have been resolved with all messages being sent and received normally.

Outage

There was an outage from approximately 8/28 - 10:32pm EST through 8/29 - 11:05am EST. All services are operating normally at this time.

This outage was caused by a power fluctuation that left one of IrthNet's key servers unable to properly return to service.

We've resolved this issue going forward.

MySQL Database Upgraded

The MySQL database was upgraded from v4.1.8 to v4.1.12.

Database Admin Updated

The MySQL database administration application, phpMyAdmin, found at the left side menu under Client Tools, has been updated from v2.6.2-pl1 to v2.6.3-pl1.

Web Stats Upgraded

The The Irth Networks' Web Stats System has been upgraded. Improvements run the gamut from security and performance to reporting accuracy.

PHP Upgraded

The PHP web scripting engine was upgraded from v4.3.10 to v4.3.11.

Spam Identification System Reactivated

The spam identification system has been reactivated for all IrthNet email accounts.

Identification of spam was chosen rather than outright blocking to guard against the elimination of emails that are not truly spam. Using identification means that you, the end user, have control over what to do with email spam you receive.

Keep reading for what an example spam will look like and how you can configure your email client to automatically handle it.

In order to handle this message automatically you can create a “rule” to have your email client look for the “*SPAM*” in the subject line. When it finds it you could have it route the message to a spam folder for later examination (you should examine all messages identified as spam just in case they’re not; the system’s not infallible).

To create rules in Outlook Express v6 acess the Tools menu to Message Rules to Mail.

To create rules in Netscape/Mozilla Navigator access the Tools menu then Message Filters.

Email Delayed 12 Hours

There was a 12 hour delay, from approximately 2/8/2005 at 10:00pm EST (UTC -0500) through 2/8/2005 at 10:00am EST (UTC -0500) in distribution of email to clients. This has been resolved with no incoming our outgoing email lost.

Scheduled Downtime

IrthNet's ISP will be conducting network maintenance beginning at 02:00am EST (UTC -0500) on 1/13/2005, lasting until 04:00am EST (UTC -0500) that same morning. While no extended downtime is anticipated, due to the nature of the work being performed intermittent disconnections and possibly loss of connectivity may occur for brief periods of time.

This downtime is for the installation of a network security tool providing a high level of protection from various network flooding and malware attacks.

PHP Cache Updated

The PHP accelerator/optimizer content cache has been updated from the Turck MMCache to eAccelerator. This will result in greater reliability and a slight performance increase.

With upgrades of this type some scripts may not function correctly. If you have one of these scripts please send an email to IrthNet Support and we'll look into the issue immediately.

MySQL & PHP Connection Issue

There was an issue with connections from PHP to the MySQL database which resulted in a 60 minute downtime between approximately 18:00 EST and 19:00 EST. This has been resolved and all PHP scripts are working properly.

Web Stats Issue

There is an issue with processing of September and October web access data. Results for both months are either incomplete or incorrect. We'll post any additional information including prognosis for resolution in this news entry.
