Webserver Logging Changed

Webserver Logging Changed

The current style of logging webserver accesses into a single, uncompressed, access.log file has changed. Due to issues such as forcing clients to download a file that grows increasingly larger over time we have added the following functionality:

  • Access logs are now named indicating the month and year in which they occurred. Therefore webserver accesses that take place in September of 2003 will now be saved in a file that reflects this. The format used is access_(month number)_(full year).log. Therefore the aforementioned webserver accesses would be written to an access log file called access_092003.log.
  • Periodically access logs will be compressed via Gnu zip, otherwise known as gzip. Using the previous example, upon compression the filename would be access_092003.log.gz. The Gnu zip format is usable in Microsoft Windows compression tools such as WinZip and via the Unix/Linux tool gzip.
